Ashes are a visible reminder of the inward reality that we’re all on our way toward the grave. “Remember that you were dust, and to dust you will return.” That cheery sentiment is being applied to foreheads around the world today as a reminder that we are in need of forgiveness and new life…forgiveness and new life found in the cross of Jesus.
As we begin the season of Lent with our graves in view, we look forward to the conclusion of Lent with an Easter celebration that places our empty tombs in view!
“Or don’t you know that all of us who were baptized into Christ Jesus were baptized into his death? We were therefore buried with him through baptism into death in order that, just as Christ was raised from the dead through the glory of the Father, we too may live a new life. If we have been united with him like this in his death, we will certainly also be united with him in his resurrection.” Romans 6:3-5
As we wash our foreheads tonight we remember this wonderful promise that we are united into Jesus’ death and RESURRECTION! Heading into the ashes of our grave is not going to be the final state…there is a resurrection to await!
