March 6: Wisdom=Love and Faithfulness (2)

“Let love and faithfulness never leave you; bind them around your neck, write them on the tablet of your heart.  Proverbs 3:3

Make love and faithfulness as precious to you as a diamond necklace and as important to you as the beating of your heart…and you’ll find wisdom.

A place to start is Paul’s stellar description of love in I Corinthians chapter 13.  Like a brilliant shining diamond, Paul looks at love from multifaceted angles.  Turn it slowly and consider how much beauty there is to be found in the precious gift of love.

This is definitely an exercise in Law and Gospel for us!  When we read Paul’s description of love two things are clear.  First, the Law:  The love that I live for my neighbor NEVER comes close to the ideal.  I’m not patient or kind and I fail regularly.  Looking at the precious ideal of love makes me look like a chipped piece of costume jewelry fitted with a tarnished cubic zirconium!  It’s clear that my love doesn’t measure up.

The second clear thing is that God’s love more than makes up for me!  That’s the Gospel!  It’s good news that I see in Paul’s description of God’s love.  God’s love is shown to us in Jesus.  In fact, you can go back to I Corinthians 13 and replace “love” with “Jesus,” and it will still be 100% true.  Jesus is patient, kind, and unfailing.  That faithful love shown by Jesus is the precious love to wear like a rare diamond and is more important than the beats of our hearts.   Wear Jesus proudly, and mark yourself with his love as a first step toward living the wise life!
