Do not be wise in your own eyes; fear the Lord and shun evil. This will bring health to your body and nourishment to your bones. Proverbs 3:7-8
Guys don’t like to stop and ask for directions. I think this is the direct cause of the Fall. If only Adam would’ve stopped and checked the directions again before taking a bite of that apple! He thought he knew what he was doing, and he ended up driving the whole of humanity off a cliff!
Stopping to ask for directions just reminds us of how we don’t know everything. We don’t like that. Women don’t either for that matter. It’s part of our human nature to want to be the wise one. We want to be the one people come to for advice and help. We want to be in the driver’s seat setting the course and leading the way.
Maybe that’s why Bible reading is such a struggle for many Christians to make a daily habit? Going to God’s word is the way we ask for directions, and the way we remind ourselves that His ways are higher and better than mine. It takes humility to come to God’s Word. It takes humility to really see the NEED for God’s Word. Pastor Tim Keller said it best, “If Jesus didn’t think he could handle life without knowing the Scripture inside and out, what makes you think you can?”
