“Honor the Lord with your wealth, with the firstfruits of all your crops; then your barns will be filled to overflowing, and your vats will brim over with new wine.” Proverbs 3:9-10
Jesus teaches proportional giving. If you earn $100, then you give God $10. If you earn a million dollars, then you give God $100,000. A tithe of ten percent is the base line for Jesus. To the heart the number doesn’t matter. It’s not about the stuff, but about my heart. This can be empowering to someone who has less. It’s not about the amount that I give, but about my heart for God. That’s proportional giving.
Jesus also teaches proportional KEEPING. If you earn $100, then you get to KEEP $90! If you earn a million, you get to keep $900,000. To put it that way makes it seem like God is a pretty generous God, doesn’t it? What if we looked at proportional giving as proportional keeping instead? It might just help us honor God a little better with our wealth because it takes the focus off of what I’m giving to God, and puts it squarely on what God is giving ME! Thinking about proportional keeping makes me realize just how generous our God is!
