One of the most moving worship experiences every year happens on Good Friday when we sing in the darkness of a single candle lighting the sanctuary. Hanging above the altar is a large cross draped in black and holding a crown of thorns. Often we sing the great African American Spiritual: Were You There.
Sometimes it causes me to tremble. Were you there when they crucified my Lord?
Romans 6 says, “Yes!” You WERE there when they crucified your Lord! Paul says it this way: “Or don’t you know that all of us who were baptized into Christ Jesus were baptized into his death? We were therefore buried with him through baptism into death in order that, just as Christ was raised from the dead through the glory of the Father, we too may live a new life. For if we have been united with him in a death like his, we will certainly also be united with him in a resurrection like his.” Romans 6:3-5
Baptism connects us with the death of Jesus, the burial of Jesus, AND the resurrection of Jesus! You WERE there when they crucified him! You WERE there when they buried him. You WERE there when He rose to life! By baptism God has connected you to Jesus. If you died with Him, then you’ll also RISE with Him!
Sometimes that causes me to tremble!
Dear Jesus, you died and rose again. Thank you for Baptism which means I will rise too! Amen.
