2 Corinthians 5:17 (Day 8/50)

“If anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; the old has gone, the new has come.” 2 Corinthians 5:17

Today was the first day above 70 degrees in my part of Massachusetts since October. It felt like the harsh winter is now gone and the warmth of Spring has finally come. I think that’s the kind of feeling one has when they’re ‘in Christ.’ When you are brought into Jesus the old is gone and the new has come! It is such a change that it feels like two different climates. It feels like the first warm sunny day in six months after a long harsh and record-breaking winter.

Do you know how that feels? If you came to know Jesus and were baptized as an older child or an adult you might remember how it felt to be apart from Jesus and then brought into his family in baptism for the first time as a believer. You know the stark transition from one who was wandering in the darkness to one who was found by Jesus in His marvelous light.

Many of you don’t know that feeling because you were brought into God’s kingdom as a baby. You WERE born in sin, you WERE an enemy of God, you WERE spiritually dead; and Jesus called you out of darkness into his marvelous light too. You were just too young to remember the feeling and to know the drastic difference. Your experience is like the person from Texas who travels north to Boston this summer for a vacation and says, “It’s not so cold here. I don’t see a lot of snow around here. What’s the big deal?”  Ask any Bostonian to tell you the big deal and you’ll hear about feet of snow, ice dams, and roof rakes; then you’ll see a huge smile and hear about the warmth of the sun, and how wonderful it feels today.  Just because the Texan didn’t feel the cold and see the snow doesn’t mean it wasn’t there.  Just because you might not feel the difference doesn’t mean you didn’t experience that change!

It feels great today in Boston. It feels even better to be in Christ!

Dear Jesus, thank you for my new life in you! Amen.
